چکیده

2 Abstract. Research on the use of mathematical, logical, and formal methods, has been central to Information Retrieval research for long time. Research in this area is important not only because it helps enhancing retrieval effectiveness, but also because it helps clarifying the underlying concepts of Information Retrieval. In this article we outline some of the major aspects of the subject, and summarise the papers of this special issue with respect to how they relate to these aspects. We conclude highlighting some directions of future research, which are needed in order to better understand the formal characteristics of Information Retrieval.

Lexical measurements for information retrieval : a quantum approach

The problem of determining whether a document is about a loosely defined topic is at the core of text Information Retrieval (IR). An automatic IR system should be able to determine if a document is likely to convey information on a topic. In most cases, it has to do it solely based on measurements of the use of terms in the document (lexical measurements). In this work a novel scheme for measur...

A short introduction to two approaches in formal verification of security protocols: model checking and theorem proving

In this paper, we shortly review two formal approaches in verification of security protocols; model checking and theorem proving. Model checking is based on studying the behavior of protocols via generating all different behaviors of a protocol and checking whether the desired goals are satisfied in all instances or not. We investigate Scyther operational semantics as n example of this...

Content Based Radiographic Images Indexing and Retrieval Using Pattern Orientation Histogram

Introduction: Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is a method of image searching and retrieval in a  database. In medical applications, CBIR is a tool used by physicians to compare the previous and current  medical images associated with patients pathological conditions. As the volume of pictorial information  stored in medical image databases is in progress, efficient image indexing and retri...

Logical s-t Min-Cut Problem: An Extension to the Classic s-t Min-Cut Problem

Let $G$ be a weighted digraph, $s$ and $t$ be two vertices of $G$, and $t$ is reachable from $s$. The logical $s$-$t$ min-cut (LSTMC) problem states how $t$ can be made unreachable from $s$ by removal of some edges of $G$ where (a) the sum of weights of the removed edges is minimum and (b) all outgoing edges of any vertex of $G$ cannot be removed together. If we ignore the second constraint, ca...
